 During
WWII, travel restrictions prevented the usual enormous cheering
squads from going to away games. So in 1942, under orders from
the Navy, some midshipmen filled the visitors stands in Annapolis
and cheered for Army. In 1943, Army returned the favor. "In
1944, the decision was made to play again before a large crowd,"
Herbert said. "But in order to buy a ticket — the
game was played in Baltimore — you had to buy a war bond.
In spite of the danger of submarine attacks, the entire Army
Corps of Cadets came to Annapolis by ship, with a Navy escort."
It was a warm day, Herbert said. The cadets had to march three
miles from the dock to the stadium, wearing overcoats and raincoats.
"But we won the game, 23-7, and the national championship,"
he said, "which made up for it." |
